For those of you that don’t know, my name is Aaron Castilleja, and I am the new(ish) owner of CrossFit DSP. My wife and I (Lauren) officially took this gym over in September of 2019. This was the first CrossFit gym I ever attended, so I hold a special place in my heart for it (hence why I decided to buy it). Owning a gym was never a “dream” of mine. I found CrossFit at a time in my life where I needed it most. Things weren’t necessarily going my way, and I needed to change something quick.

But that is not what I am here to talk about today.

I have done a pretty crappy job of sharing my mission with my current members, as well as the community.

I want to put an end to that today.

Things happened very quickly when we decided to buy CrossFit DSP. It was seriously a blur.  One day, we were just normal people living our every day normal life, and the next we are business owners with major responsibilities. During the transition from the previous owners I worked so hard on making the transition smooth, that I completely forgot to tell why I decided to take on DSP and what my mission is.

I love CrossFit. Anyone who knows me (especially my wife) knows that I am constantly watching or learning anything that has to do with the training methodology. But what I love even more, is seeing the positive impacts that working out can have on someones life. And I am not just talking about CrossFit. I am talking about all types of exercising.

My mission? I want to help 1000 people in the Temple-Belton-Killeen area become healthy through good nutrition and exercise. No matter your age, athletic capabilities or economic status. Period. I KNOW there are 1000 people in this area that could benefit from becoming healthier inside and out. And I want to be the gym that changed their life.

I also have an even bigger mission. Say what?! Bigger than helping 1000 people get healthy and happy?! Yup. I want to #TransformTemple. I want to change the way people think about working out and living a healthy life here. To be honest, I am kind of obsessed with it right now. Why? Because I know it can happen.

Now you may be asking yourself, “But Aaron, how are you going to get 1000 people to try CrossFit? Isn’t that a little far stretched?” The answer to that is yes, it is far stretched. But take a look at the title again. We are CrossFit DSP…..for now. I am taking something old, and turning it into something new. With the goals that I have for Temple, there are some things that need to be changed, and our name is one of them.

CrossFit is an exercise program we offer, not who WE ARE.

Now that doesn’t mean we are changing who we are or what we stand for. Our community and current members mean the world to us. We wouldn’t be here today without them and their support. I am just starting to think bigger so we can reach (help) more people.

CrossFit is the only service we offer now, but that will not always be the case. My team and I are working each day to be able to provide more options for different types of exercising. As much as I would love it to, unfortunately, these changes won’t happen over night. We are currently in TESTING mode. I want to be sure that the product we put out is something that we are going to be proud of. I won’t go into too much detail here, but just know that a new program is coming. 😊 And it is straight 🔥🔥🔥

While we do plan to transform what we offer as a whole, don’t think that our DSP60 program that we offer now isn’t relevant. This program is our bread and butter (like Texas Roadhouse bread and butter. MMMM). DSP60 is top notch and is a beautiful blend of strength + conditioning. Don’t believe me? Come check us out. Why is CrossFit so expensive?

Is CrossFit worth the premium price that it charges?

Ahh the the million dollar question that gets asked on a daily basis when potential clients walk through the door. For some, it may be hard to justify paying the premium price that you would pay for a CrossFit membership. To be fair, I can see how someone could be skeptical the first time they walk in the door, but it is important to understand that the membership you are getting with a CrossFit gym should not be compared to your typical “Globo” gym.

With the rapid growth of CrossFit in the last 10 years, you may find yourself wondering what all they hype is and are just curious on what it would cost you to join the craze. Maybe you have done some shopping around and just can’t figure out why a membership costs so much.

Either way, here are some answers to help you understand why it costs so much and if it would be worth it to you (spoiler alert, it is) to jump ship on that gym membership that you’ve been paying for and not getting results with. 😊

Also, I would like to note that all of my opinions are based off of my gym, CrossFit DSP. Although gym owners pay an affiliate fee to use the brand and name CrossFit, we are not franchises, and each gym is going to be different.

CrossFit memberships vary by region

As I stated before, all CrossFit gyms are independently owned so price is going to vary by region and location within the city that you are located. I have seen memberships range anywhere from $120-$225 per month. A good rule of thumb is that the more metropolitan, the more expensive. Some gyms will also be more expensive based on additional services that they offer.

If you are in an area that has multiple CrossFit gyms, my advice would be to call all of them and get an idea of what an average cost is. Don’t feel bad about shopping around either. A lot of CrossFit gyms have their own vibe so check them all out and see which one suites you best.

Now that you have an understanding of an average gym membership cost, you may be asking yourself why the heck does this cost so much? We are going to get into that next.

The VALUE of a CrossFit membership

You may be thinking to yourself that a membership to the Planet Fitness down the road for $10 a month sounds more appealing. But what happens when you get there? What are you going to do? Most people don’t have a clue what to workout and how to plan a week of workouts, so they get stuck running on the treadmill or getting on the elliptical for 30-40 minutes and calling it “good”. Is that really going to get you the results you want? Is that going to get you into your bridesmaid dress for your best friends wedding in 3 months? How about losing those 20lbs so you can run around with your kids outside and play without getting tired?  In CrossFit, we pride ourselves on “training for life”. Our workouts prepare you for whatever life throws at you. And although that is physically, you would be surprised at the mental toughness you get from CrossFit as well.

With a CrossFit membership you have coaches who are trained to work with you. You don’t walk in the gym unnoticed, be there for an hour, then leave. That is not how the membership works. You get one on one instruction in a group setting. Unlike other group training models, a class typically doesn’t have upwards of 30 people, so the coache(s) can make sure you are getting the attention that you need. You pay a premium price, and for that premium price you should get an excellent class experience and workout. It is the gym owners and coaches goal to provide you with that each and every day.

Have you ever been at the gym and were worried if you were doing an exercise wrong? Have you wondered if people were staring at you and judging you because you look like you have no clue what you are doing? It is intimidating. And one of the main reasons why people quit going to their local gym. In CrossFit, the coaches are trained to help you every step of the way. If you don’t know how to do a movement, no problem! They are there to help you. Think about having your own personal trainer, but in a group setting. The coach will help you with questions, guide you on movement patterns, and help you navigate your workout each day. No one gets left behind in a CrossFit class.

Biceps and Triceps? Back and Shoulders? Cardio? Where do you even start?! You never have to worry about what workout you are going to do each day. We take all of the guesswork out of that for you. Each day is different, and we focus on all aspects of fitness to get you the best results possible. All you have to do is show up. Seriously. By providing hands on coaching each day, your chances of getting results increases exponentially. Yeah, the price is going to be higher, but the coaches will do everything to help you get the results you are looking for. And the best part? You are going to have fun doing it!

You get what you pay for!

To recap, here is what you will get when you join a CrossFit gym:

  • One on one training with a coach to set goals and evaluate YOUR movement patterns to better assist you in your journey.
  • Workouts that change every day to constantly keep you on your toes and not get “stuck”.
  • An atmosphere that is hard to beat. You will be surrounded by people who will be your cheerleader and encourage you each day. No more feeling like you are being judged because you don’t know what you are doing.
  • Results. The coaches will help you get the results you want, period. They are there for you. Use them as much as possible!

Before you write off joining a CrossFit gym because of cost, really sit back and analyze what your health and fitness is worth to you. Be realistic with the goals you have for yourself and put some thought into if you could achieve those goals on your own at your local gym. Whichever route you go, we wish you the best of luck!
